તુંગનાથ - દુનિયા નુ સૌથી ઊંચું શિવાલય

તુંગનાથ - દુનિયા નુ સૌથી ઊંચું શિવાલય, હર હર મહાદેવ

દુનિયામાં સૌથીં વધુ ઉંચાઈએ આવેલું શિવજીનું મંદિર કયું, અને તે ક્યાં આવેલું છે, તે જાણો છો? એ છે તુંગનાથ મહાદેવ, અને તે ઉત્તરાખંડ રાજ્યના રુદ્રપ્રયાગ જીલ્લામાં ૩૬૮૦ મીટર (૧૨૦૭૩ ફૂટ) ઉંચાઈએ આવેલું છે. તુંગનાથનો અર્થ જ છે, શિખરોના ભગવાન. આ મંદિર આગળ અને ત્યાં જવાના રસ્તે શિયાળામાં બરફ છવાઈ જાય છે, એટલે શિયાળામાં મંદિર બંધ રહે છે. શિયાળામાં ભગવાનની મૂર્તિ, તુંગનાથથી ૧૯ કી.મી. દૂર, નીચે મુક્કુ ગામના મુક્કુમઠમાં લાવી દેવાય છે. પૂજારીજી પણ મુક્કુમઠમાં આવી જાય છે. એપ્રિલના અંતમાં જયારે બરફ પીગળી જાય ત્યારે મૂર્તિને વાજતેગાજતે તુંગનાથ લઇ જવાય છે, પછી નવેમ્બરના મધ્ય સુધી મંદિર ખુલ્લું રહે છે. એટલે તુંગનાથ મહાદેવનાં દર્શન કરવાં હોય તો આ સમયગાળામાં (ઉનાળામાં) જ ત્યાં જવું જોઈએ.

તુંગનાથ મહાદેવ ક્યાં થઈને, કેવી રીતે જવાય? આ માટે પહેલાં તો હરિદ્વારથી ચોપટા જવું પડે. હરિદ્વારથી કેદારનાથના રસ્તે NH-58 પર, હિમાલયના પહાડોમાં ગંગા નદીના કિનારે કિનારે જવાનું. હરિદ્વારથી ઋષિકેશ, દેવપ્રયાગ, કીર્તિનગર, શ્રીનગર, રુદ્રપ્રયાગ, અગત્સ્ય મુનિ અને પછી કુંડ ગામ આવે. કુંડથી ડાબે વળીએ તો કેદારનાથ જવાય, એ બાજુ નહિ જવાનું, એને બદલે સીધા જવાનું. એ રસ્તે કુંડ પછી ઉખીમઠ, દુગ્ગલબીટ્ટા અને પછી ચોપટા ગામ આવે.

તુંગનાથ થી હજુ દોઢેક કી.મી. જેટલું આગળ ચડીને ચંદ્રશીલા નામના શિખર પર પહોંચાય છે. આમ જુઓ તો તુંગનાથ, ચંદ્રશીલા શિખરની તળેટીમાં હોય એવું લાગે. ચંદ્રશીલાની ઉંચાઈ ૪૦૦૦ મીટર છે. ચંદ્રશીલા પર પહોંચો એટલે કોઈ પર્વતની ટોચે આવી ગયા હોઈએ એવું લાગે.

આ શિખર પર પણ ગંગા ધામ નામનું એક નાનું મંદિર છે. ચંદ્રશીલા પરથી આજુબાજુનો નજારો કેવો ભવ્ય છે, તે તો ત્યાં જાઓ ત્યારે જ અનુભવવા મળે. અહીંથી પેલાં બધાં જ બરફછાયાં શિખરો અને તુંગનાથ તરફની ખીણો જોવા મળે છે. રામ ભગવાને રાવણને માર્યા પછી ચંદ્રશીલા પર ધ્યાન ધર્યું હતું

Why Visit Tungnath Temple?

Magnificent in its architecture and artistic structure, Tungnath Temple is considered to be more than 1000 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and few other idols of Goddess Parvati and other gods can be seen in the vicinity. This sacred temple was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya and now the priest of this temple is a local Brahmins of Makku village.

The symbolic image of Lord Shiva is moved to Mukunath during winters, situated 19kms away. The trek goes through rocky terrains, green meadows and rhododendron bushes showering us with visual vistas of nature. The invigorating views of the imposing Himalayas boosts with confidence in the heart of the trekkers. Several named and unnamed peaks of the Himalayan range are distinctly visible from Tungnath

Activities in Tungnath

Trekking – The trek route to Tungnath commences at Chopta and involves easy to medium grade trekking. The enthralling treks take some through enchanting meadows, hushed hamlets, and conifers and oak forests. In winter, the trekking route is covered in snow. You can continue the trek to Chandrashila Summit as well.

Pilgrimage – Perched at a height of 3,600 meters, Tungnath shrine is one of the revered Panch Kedar dedicated to Lord Shiva in Uttarakhand and large number of pilgrims visits the shrine. The shrine sleeps under a thick blanket of snow during winters.

Bird Watching – You can see Monal and other birds easily around Tungnath. If lucky you can also spot musk deers in the region.
